Why your baby is not sleeping deeply
Do you find yourself wondering if your baby is getting any good quality sleep at all, as they seem to spend most of the night in a light, restless state? It’s a common concern for many parents, and in this mini-masterclass, I shed light on the truths about how babies sleep and why they tend to spend a significant portion of their night in a light sleep.
Babies spend up to 50% of their night’s sleep in a much lighter, more active sleep. While it may not feel restful to us, this light sleep is crucial for their development. It is during this phase that babies experience REM sleep, where they are in their dream state, which is essential for consolidating memories and brain development.
The noises, fidgeting, and shallow breathing often observed during this sleep phase are signs of great quality sleep for babies. However, this light, restless sleep can sometimes lead to disturbances for parents who are sharing a room with their baby. You can try creating a little space between the baby’s sleep area and the parents’ sleeping space, using white noise, and taking turns with a partner to ensure both baby and parents get the rest they need.
This restless light sleep is normal and essential for babies, try to find solutions that work for your family to ensure everyone gets the rest they need.
